Car Emissions
The Dreaded Truth: In 2007
a BBC correspondent wrote a detailed feature on the polluting
car emissions and EU plans to curb the menace by
straightforwardly attacking the car exhaust emissions. The
article explicitly suggested, bad news for UK carmakers, because
a master plan to combat climate change was underway. The write
up further quoted Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas
referring to mandatory standards which would permit not more
than 120 grams of CO2 emissions for an average car. The plan
sounded tough and prone to serious debates. Political opposition
was almost certain, especially considering that the section most
affected would be those running spacious – larger engine cars.
But this was last year (2007) and while Mr. Dimas wanted all to
consider climate change as war, Chancellor Alistair Darling,
seemed the one most enthused. He quickly got into action and in
a matter of few months, this March, introduced the
new car tax
rates schema.

The Modified Car Tax Rate Plan
The car emissions based
car tax rates, are a clear indication of
what else could happen on account of dealing with CO2 cars. The
terminology CO2 cars has been chosen here, because for tax
purposes, CO2 emissions are quite vital and in fact the
categorization yardstick.
Car tax
prices are levied based upon the car band, which in turn
is a function of the CO2 car emissions. As per the modified car
tax rates, cars which fall under the preview of band A & B (car
emissions < 120 g/km), would not be charged increased taxes,
while the rest, which happens to be the majority, will be prone
to increased car tax rates. The desire to convert CO2 cars to
more efficient greener cars is the biggest motivation behind this modified tax
plan.

The Consequences
Changes to the applicable
car tax rates
are quite a serious phenomenon, with equally critical responses from
various groups. Few of the most noticeable reactions to car emissions
based tax strategy are:
-
An average earning UK family person is anticipated to play an
instrumental role as an opponent, to this government decision. It is
feared that because, older cars too are included in the increased car
tax rates structure, many who own spacious cars with equally larger
engines, adding considerably to car exhaust emissions, would not be able
to financially cope up with the change. This sudden monetary burden is
logical to create unrest among masses, which might soon be visible in
form of protests.
-
Honda has announced launch of
greener cars in competition to the
available CO2 cars. A four seater, this new car would run on electricity
and emit only water vapour. Honda President claims the move, as an
attempt by the company, to produce environment loving vehicles. Well
certainly, the car would be environment friendly, and considering the
new car emissions based car tax rates in UK, the vehicle would be
profitable as well. This perhaps is just the beginning. If the drive to
create greener surroundings continues to affect CO2 cars, the way it
has, many more brands would like to be environment friendly.
-
A pollution free environment, though expensive, seems attainable. The
new car tax rates are difficult to accommodate, but at the same time, it
cannot be negated that climatic conditions, demand immediate attention.
With car emissions being targeted, chances of a cleaner air have
increased.
